Wingspan 12-19 mm.A relatively common species throughout the British Isles, occupying heathland and moorland.
The moth is easy to identify with its variegated rufous-brown and silvery-white appearance, but is not easily observed, since it tends to rest well-camouflaged amongst the low moorland plants and does not fly readily.
The larvae feed on heather (Calluna) and heath (Erica), in spun shoots.
The adults emerge around September to October and overwinter till spring.
