1044 Acleris ferrugana

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Wingspan 14-18 mm.

This is a very variable species, and closely resembles A. notana. The two are best separated by examination of the genitalia, but ferrugana often shows a small black tuft of scales at a quarter distance from the head.

The species inhabits woodland and is fairly commn throughout the British Isles.

The adults fly in July and again in September and October, the second generation overwintering to reappear in spring.

The larvae feed mainly on oak (Quercus) in a spinning between leaves.
