103 Stigmella nylandriella

(Tengström, 1848)

Wingspan 4-5 mm.

A small species which creates distinctive mines in the leaves of rowan (Sorbus aucuparia), usually following the serrated edge of the leaf.

There is one generation with adults in May and June, and the larvae feeding from July to August.

It has a wide but localised distribution throughout the British Isles, being commoner in the north, along with the foodplant.

The adult moth has plain dark brown wings with a bronzy sheen and a yellowish or orange head.
