UKMoths: your guide to the moths of Great Britain and Ireland

Search by name:

Note:
To search by appearance (colour, markings etc.) try the new Keyword search.

The search routine will search for any substring within a moth's name. For example, if you use the search term "red", the results will include Pink-barred Sallow and Bordered Pug as well as Red Underwing.

You can also search for any of the Bradley and Fletcher numbers.

Hyphens (-) in moth names are now ignored, so Pink barred will work just as well as Pink-barred.

Notes:

Search Type

Standard search: This is the default and searches the names of moths (both scientific and vernacular), as well as the index (Bradley & Fletcher reference).

Full-text search: Selecting this option will force the search to perform a full-text search in the species text, but ignores the species name and index number.

When using Full-text search, try to use 'target' words to limit your search results to a manageable number. It is perhaps most useful for searching for things like specific foodplants.

These options are only available for Standard search.

Show Thumbnails will display the search results as thumbnail images rather than text links.

Search Photographers will, in addition to species name and index number, search for a match in the photographer's name. This can be useful if you wish to list just your own photos.
